Church & Society

MISSION: The mission of the Church & Society Team of Munsey UMC is to embody the love of God for the world through social education, social witness, and social action.

In 2013, the major emphases are:

Initiate Bread for the World Sunday*

            In the context of worship:

            Affirm the congregation’s engagement with hunger/poverty programs

            Make the congregation aware of hunger/poverty issues

            Prepare and send an Offering of Letters to our legislators at the close of worship

Offer a Hunger/Poverty Study Series

            Invite representatives of local programs that address hunger.

            Give participants information about advocacy on behalf of those who don’t have food security

Promote Fair Trade and Fair Trade Sales

            Make available information on Fair Trade.

            Conduct Fair Trade Sales as a way to assist in lifting farmers out of abject poverty

Continue to Implement Energy Efficiency in Munsey’s Buildings and Programs         Work with maintenance staff, Trustees, and Church Council on this goal

            Raise congregation’s awareness of actions they can take as individuals

Continue Support of GINI (Green Interfaith Network, Inc.)

            Publicize GINI events/meetings in the congregation
            Promote participation of Munsey members in GINI activities

Raise Awareness of the United Methodist Social Principles

            Present programs to at least two Sunday School classes

Promote Health and Wellness

            Encourage more use of the walking track and exercise room
            Cooperate with the Parish Nurse and the CLC Director in all health-related efforts

Promote Awareness of Animal Rights

            Distribute relevant materials

            Tie animal treatment in with environmental concerns

            Promote better eating habits that affect animals and the environment

Raise Awareness of Immigration Issues

            Primarily among team members


Raise Awareness about Reduction of Nuclear Weaponry/Peace Issues

            Primarily among team members

* The plan is to have Bread for the World Sunday on alternate years with Care for Creation Sunday.
